A couple of weeks ago I was listening to Radio 1, Fearne Cotton's 10am - 1:45pm weekday show in particular, and happened to hear the most gorgeous, beautiful, serenely gentle voice pouring out of the radio speakers. The owner of that voice was the wonderful British singer Billie Marten, who I later found out is only fifteen years old and still a proud wearer of braces (you go girl!) yet her voice is essentially fully developed and so wise beyond her years. It's just magical, as are her song writing capabilities which shine alongside her voice so spectacularly in her début single 'Ribbon', a gorgeous acoustic guitar lead song that is currently causing a stir within the music industry and rightly so too.
Billie hails from a musical North Yorkshire family and has been uploading You Tube videos since the age of 12, after being inspired by both a certain Laura Marling as well as the music playing capabilities of other family members. It only takes one listen to one of her videos for her clearly evident talent and worth as a musician to shine brightly and boldly through.
When I was fifteen I too tried to articulate my hormonal, angsty, crush fuelled feelings and observations of the world into song lyrics and then actual songs, mostly because I was obsessed with Taylor Swift and she said that that was how she dealt and still deals with emotions, by turning them into a song. But my attempts all those years ago make me cringe so bad, because they were absolutely hopeless, and they taught me how hard song writing and composition is if you haven't got that natural touch, like a duck takes to swimming in water, which Billie Marten so very clearly has.
Therefore I admire Billie so very much, and the fact that she can sing as beautifully and maturely as she does, and write the most sublime and enchanting lyrics at the tender age of fourteen, is a sure fire indicator to me that this girl is quite literally a star in the making and deserves to have all her musical dreams come true. I have no doubt whatsoever that she will go on to achieve great things, and can you just imagine the body of work she'll be producing and the sound of her voice in just a few years time, if this is what Billie's creating now?
Gee whizz...
