I know this album was released six years ago (how time flies) but yesterday it came up
on my ipod shuffle and I was blown away, yet again, by just how amazing this album is.
The masterpiece product of a fantastic collaboration between the Arctic Monkey's lead singer
Alex Turner and a certain Miles Kane, The Age of The Understatement is just mind blowingly good.
It's an album that celebrates music and approaches it from so many different angles, although
in my opinion there is an underlying James Bond-esque theme running through it that makes me question
if Alex and Miles are secretly big 007 fans (give it a spin and you'll see what I mean) what with
the big, booming, marvellous orchestrated riffs and swoops.
There is an evident passion and momentum that runs throughout and the sound is not entirely removed
from that of both the Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane's respectively, meaning fans of both
have fallen in love with this record because it is such a beautiful combination of the musical interests
of both Turner and Kane.
You have their masterful, exquisite guitar playing, Miles's snarls and Liverpuddlian rock and roll roots,
Alex's beautiful, barmy, witty, wonderfully inventive lyrics and gorgeously diverse voice and
a broad selection of sounds that range from gentle acoustic guitar lead numbers to orchestrated
boomers, suave polished tunes and some epic pulsating wonders.
It's an album that often gets overlooked these days, what with Alex and Miles focusing on their own
successful individual projects, however it's such a corker and masterpiece of a record and of such high
quality for saying it's only a side project venture, that it deserves to be spun again and
again and again (if possible). Furthermore, with many recent Monkeys
gigs seeing Miles reunited with Alex, there's hope that a Last Shaddow Puppets second album could
be closer on the horizon than we think.
