Philip Bannister

PHILIP BANNISTER
On Saturday I went into the incredibly busy Manchester city centre for a little peruse around the Northern Quarter. I happened to go into a wonderful independent art gallery and came away with a list of names to look into, and hopefully feature on zee blog at some point in the near future. Now interestingly, the artist I want to show you this morning, Philip Bannister, was not one of those artists. The 'Bannister' I had found was a young artist called Nicolas Bannister, whose work I will probably feature soon as his work is so cool, but upon googling the name Bannister, I stumbled across Philip and was instantly captivated by his absolutely stunning portfolio. There's a serene, gentle and gorgeous quality about his work that stems from his ability to extract the quiet, often overlooked beauty of the everyday world around us, and present it to you in such a delightfully aesthetic way.

Philip is a Yorkshire born artist who captures architecture, people, atmospheres, objects and vividly brings them to life using loose, fluid strokes of watercolour inks. His work reminds me of looking at a scene before you as it's drenched in light leakages, like the sun when it's so bright it rays can't help but touch upon everything in their pathway upon their descent to earth. And when you look up you have to squint your eyes slightly in order to focus on the scene before you and take it all in. Philip's artwork is so varied and yet each piece is a real aesthetic delight to the eye and a stunning representation of the world around us, which is why you'll often see his work in the likes of the Daily Telegraph magazine, Country Life, National Geographic, the BBC, The Independent... the list goes on. And so to celebrate such a fantastic artistic talent, here are some of my favourite Philip Bannister pieces...
