Little IUDEA

LITTLE IUDEA

I've been meaning to write about these little beauties for a while now. Produced by the independent business Little IUDEA, these wooden boxes are handmade and contain a thoughtful, inspiring, meaningful and creative piece of 3D art, designed to make you think and smile. Most have accompanying quotes that address an important and simple aspect of life, and the most beautiful, intricate, accompanying scene to go with it. Little people occupying their own fragment of the world, and embodying those guiding words of wisdom.

The name of the business, Little IUDEA, also has an equally lovely message behind it. On the one hand, it refers to the tourist name for the old capital of Thailand, a place where art, culture and happiness existed blissfully, hand in hand, and also where one of the business co-founders is from. And on the other hand, it refers to putting a 'u', or 'you', alongside the 'I' in 'idea'. It's so very sweet. Looking at these little pieces of artwork, you can't help but wonder why no-one has ever thought to create something like this before. To me anyway, they're just ingenious, and I love everything about them, from the way they look, to what they represent, and the thought and detail embedded in every single one.

I first came across Little IUDEA back in December, when they had a stall at the Christmas Market inside Foyle's Bookstore. It really was love at first sight, but at the time I just couldn't justify spending £35 on my own little box, plus I couldn't even begin to decide which one to choose! But I wrote the name down, and I'm hoping to buy one for my 21st birthday, as a little treat. Usually, Little IUDEA can be found at Spitalfields Market in East London, every Saturday and Sunday, and you can also found out more about them via their Facebook too.

They're just the most thoughtful, beautiful, endearing little things, and they make for the most perfect gifts to give loved ones too. I've included a selection of my favourites below. All photos are taken from Little IUDEA's Facebook page, and all are almost guaranteed to make you swoon with sweetness and love.

Dr Martens Dreaming

POLLEY IVORY 20822101

DR MARTENS DREAMING

It's not much of a secret that I really, really, really love Dr Martens. They're my all time favourite design of shoe, so much so that they influence all the shoes I buy that aren't Dr Martens. I'm instantly drawn to anything with thick, sturdy, clumpy soles and looks like an androgynous-feminine hybrid. Often when I go on nights out, I turn to either my Docs or my other shoes with generous soles, as my designated choice of footwear. When I'm out in the day, there's an 8/10 chance you'll know exactly what shoes I'll be wearing. With my Docs especially, I love the height they give me. I love the way they anchor down my body. I love how clumpy they are. I love how functional they are, and how they make me feel empowered. I love their versatility, and how I can where them with so many outfits, at so many places, at any time of day. In particular with my blueberry coloured Docs, I love how people associate them with me now. They're part of my identity. One time, a friend of mine said he knew it was me walking ahead of him, because he saw said shoes, and knew instantly that it had to be me. Those same shoes were also my 17th birthday present, and to me almost mark a before and after in my life. They signal an important time in my life, when everything seemed to change and revolve 180 degrees, and whenever I look at my Docs now, I'm reminded of how far I've come, as is it reflected by the gradual appearance of lines and creases that mark the passing of time.

My Dad is also a Docs fanatic, and for him also, his shoes are symbolic of different points in his life, as have they served him incredibly well over the years. And I hope that that's the same for me too. It's great to change and evolve and find yourself, but it's also so nice to carry something along with you for the ride too. to mark that change. Have that little bit of consistency, a part of you that stays no matter what. That carries meaning. That stands the test of time. To me, that's what Dr Martens are, and what they do. Even now as I write, I can see my shoes just across the way, and I'm thinking about all the different places I've been with those shoes. The places I've worn them to. All these special, important, amazing times in my life, those shoes have been right there on my feet, and they'll still be doing just that for many years to come too. It seems kind of crazy to consider a shoe part of who you are, but likewise I also think it's so lovely to have something that's synonymous with who you are. It feels a bit like leaving your mark, in a way.

Now naturally with Dr Martens being my all time favourite shoe, I love to keep up with all the new designs and swoon for hours and hours, wishing I was a billionaire so I could buy all of them, and then I would be incredibly happy and content for the rest of my days. I've assembled a list of all my favourite shoes instore now, and linked them to the store too, so if you see any little gems that catch your eye, you can go peruse and lust over them some more. Obviously they're all so gorgeous and awe inducing, so you may have trouble narrowing it down, and unfortunately, unless you're a billionaire, you won't be able to buy them all either. and sassy walk around feeling like a queen. However they are an investment piece, and the fact of the matter is they'll probably outlive you, so they're well worth the money, as will they make you 100% even more fabulous (if that was even possible). But till that day comes, when you and I become triple, quadruple billionaires, I'll just be making do with lusting and wishing and internally crying. Feel free to join me.

Handmade Goodness

HANDMADE GOODNESS

On Wednesday the project I've been a part of for the last four months or so, The Closet, finally launched. Open for business at select days and times, in the shop space between Academy One and UoM Student Union, just off Oxford Road, Manchester, The Closet is a sustainable, student ran clothes shop filled with kindly donated goods available for purchase. All money raised will then be donated to the local and rather brilliant mental health charity Manchester Mind. Pretty groovy. So if you're around the area, come on down and say hello, see if you can find yourself a bargain, likewise come along to some of the events we have planned for the coming months, and help us raise as much money as possible for this incredibly worthwhile, important cause.

Our evening launch event was an almighty success, raising lots of money for Manchester Mind and selling lots of killer goods at bargain prices. The atmosphere was buzzing, with attendees including The Closet committee, lots of very generous and lovely students, some amazing young entrepreneurs (more on that in a mo), Bilderberg and Lord of the Tings residents (who treated us to some proper cracking tunes) and Dave from security. We had tons of freebees from Vita Coco, NME, Propercorn, Redbull, Manchester Mind, decorations included quirky finds including an old lamp, TV and retro radio, alongside pieces of art done by myself (as you can see in the photo above), and everyone was chatting, laughing, buying goods, donating money, and all for such a fantastic cause too. I loved every minute of it, and to finally reach that opening point, after the long haul of getting The Closet off the ground, transforming it from a mere idea to a running, live reality, was truly amazing. Hopefully it will be an almighty success, and we're now putting all our energies into keeping the project running and making it as successful as we possibly can, so if you want to get involved or see what we're up to, click here to find out more!

Now putting all that super cool stuff to one side, the main reason I wanted to write this post was to give a little heads up and promo to the wonderful, lovely, crazy talented young entrepreneurs who I met on the night. This mixture of current and former students who run their own businesses, each of which blew my mind with the sheer amazingness, kindly brought along their incredible handmade goods and set up stall for the night. I managed to speak to all of them, helped by the fact that I made the signs for each of their stalls, and it was lovely to find out more about their products, how they're made, how they run their business, what made them decide to do it and a bit about who they are as people. Likewise I relished the opportunity to heap praise upon them, because all these guys are so damn good at what they do, and it's so inspiring to see people my own age turning their ideas, talents and skills into these physical entities and real operating businesses, making their mark on the world. It gave me hope that one day soon I'll find the time to sit down, make a plan, figure out where I want to take my own skills and turn those long held dreams and ideas into action.

But till that day comes, (and it's pencilled into the diary so fingers crossed, as it's about time I stopped finding excuses to hold back), please do join me, dear readers, in marvelling at these incredible people and their equally incredible businesses.

THE CLOSET IS OPEN WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY & FRIDAY FROM 1-5PM.

MOJO KOJO

MOJO KOJO was started by the incredibly lovely Koye Adesanya, just before he graduated from the University of Manchester in July 2015. MOJO KOJO is a glorious celebration of African culture, through a hybrid of music and fashion, with Koye supplementing his fashion pursuits with regular club night IJOYA, a cracking, vibrant melting pot of Afrobeats, African Disco & African Funk. The gorgeous clothes themselves are inspired by old school 90's aesthetics, and are given a spirited revival with Koye's own African inspired pattern designs. The patterns are then printed onto fabric sourced from Koye's one time hometown Nigeria, which he still regularly visits, and crafted into the stunning MOJO KOJO pieces by Koye, examples of which you can see above, back home in the UK. The fabric is gorgeous to the touch, so well made, the patterns are bold, energetic, eye-catching, the clothes themselves are so flattering to both the male and female form, and the prices are en pointe considering what gems these clothes actually are. MOJO KOJO is definitely one to watch, so expect the dreary, drab UK to soon be injected with a much needed powerful lease of electric Africana spirit, courtesy of MOJO KOJO and the very talented Koye. And if you can't wait that long, what are you waiting for? Head over to the MOJO KOJO online shop (link below) for a dazzling, one of a kind slice of sunny African culture.

TEES ON TOAST

If you're looking for the epitome of laidback, slouchy, unique, XXX cool clothing of the simplest kind, the wonderful ladies behind Tees on Toast, Leeds students Ruby and Phoebe, are your go to girls. Both keen amateur photographers, Ruby and Phoebe decided to set up Tees on Toast to channel said love of the photographic medium, and in doing so, have quite possibly created the most genius business idea ever. So called Tees on Toast because a t-shirt is the most simplest clothing form out there, especially when one quite simply cannot be bothered to make much of an effort with one's clothes, and likewise toast is a pretty mediocre and simplistic breakfast item, Tees on Toast make their mark on this notion of simplicity and use it as the backbone of their business. The premise is that you go on to the website (link below), chose a photograph that you like (all are film photographs taken by Ruby and Phoebe, with the best titles ever), pay your £18.50 and the photographic design is then printed on to a black XXL t-shirt and delivered to you. All t-shirts come in the mandatory XXL black requirement, and once a design is bought, that's it. The design/ photograph is taken down and you become the sole owner of that now one of a kind t-shirt. Pretty cool. No, make that genius. Pure genius.

LITTLE BEASTIES

Little Beasties (what a corker of a name) was set up by two Manchester students in 2014, with the first headband being made as a way of getting into the Christmas spirit. When the first headband was an almighty success (as was that particular xmas), the ladies at Little Beasties then started making headbands and hoods for themselves and their friends to wear at parties and festivals, before setting up shop online to share their utter amazingness with the world. Now ran single-handedly by the supremely talented, absolute sweetheart and v. fashionable Bryony, Little Beasties is a fun, exciting and super quirky business that explodes onto the scene in a whirlwind of wonderful, unapologetic creative magic. Over at Little Beasties HQ you'll find Bryony crafting a multitude of absolutely one of a kind, completely unique, vibrant, colourful headbands. The headbands are made out of various charity shop finds and childhood toys, alongside sparkling materials, which Bryony then uniquely assembles onto a headband wrapped in glittering soft yawn, in a funky, eye catching arrangement. Each headband has a predominant colour scheme, and the mandatory zany, quirky, beautifully unique materials which it's constructed from, mean every head band has its own character, its own story, and is truly one. of. a. kind. And these headbands are quite literally works of art, so once you get a hold of one (and you'd best go check them out now as they're selling like hotcakes), not only can you be a festival fairy queen 4eva, but you'll also be the proud owner of your very own piece of art.

Dr Martens x Mark Wigan

DR MARTENS X MARK WIGAN

The other day I was flicking through my Instagram, as per usual, when I happened to see a post by the iconic British footwear brand Dr Martens. It was some photo of a rather groovy pair of shoes, so naturally because I'm a complete avid fan of said footwear company, I decided to look at more of the shoes just because. And it was whilst I was doing that, I came across what could quite possibly be the most amazing pair of shoes I have ever seen. The colours, the patterns, the design, the cut, everything about the shoe left me swooning. I guess you could call it a touch of love at first sight, and I just had to find out more. Turns out that this rather spectacular shoe was part of a collection of equally spectacular shoes, all of which are designed by English born artist Mark Wigan as part of a unique and limited collaboration with Dr Martens.

Mark, an avid Dr Martens wearer himself, is a highly influential leader of the world's urban art scene, pioneering the concept of unleashing art from the confines of the canvas and inner environment, and instead projecting one's creative vision onto the natural canvas of the outer environment. Using the physical formations of the outside world as a basis to spread ideas and concepts through the channel of art. Mark's highly unique artistic style and creative flair is expressed through a wide variety of mediums including illustration, fine art, urban art, gallery curating, live performances, theatre, animation.... the list is quite seemingly infinite. His inspirations include music, reading, international travel and absorbing the diverse cultures found along the way, carboot sales, fashion, clubbing, with his Dr Martens capsule collection in particular taking inspiration from the concept of 'the city at night'. In support of his collaboration, Mark also toured around Asia, visiting some of the major cities such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, personalising Dr Martens shoes and decorating stores along the way.

The collection itself is evidently so strongly influenced by all these amazing channels of inspiration, and is so fun, funky, quirky and eye catching. A real feast for the eyes and a treat for the owner in possession of such wonderful, vibrant, well made goods. And although the collection is slightly pricey, the collection is so iconic, timeless and stunning, what with the high quality Dr Martens craftsmanship, that this Mark Wigan collection is a real investment, one for the old Chrimbo list, and even if you don't end up purchasing a piece for yourself, I hope you enjoy perusing the collection!
